What is an aquifer?

An aquifer is a layer of rock or sediment deep underground — porous, permeable — that holds water. Not a river. Not a lake. Something hidden.

Rain falls on a mountain a hundred miles away. It seeps down through soil and stone, slowly, over years, over decades. It gathers in the aquifer — clean, pressurized, waiting.

When someone bores a well in exactly the right place, the water doesn't need to be pumped. The pressure has been building for so long that it rises on its own.
